New Square considers plan for poultry slaughterhouse
on Route 45

June 30, 2009  "New Square is considering a plan to allow a business to build a large poultry slaughterhouse on Route 45 across the street from New Hempstead. The proposed 50,730-square-foot facility would be built in a new industrial park at the intersection with Rovitz Place, according to documents."

"Neighbors who live in New Hempstead - across from vacant land where the slaughterhouse would be built - said they are worried about odors and other forms of pollution."

"This is a residential neighborhood, and if they build this, the whole area is going to smell like chickens," said Althea Mundy, who has lived on Elizabeth Court, near the planned site of the facility, for 13 years. "How can you put a slaughterhouse in the middle of a residential area?"
