July 28, 2010 The destruction of a pristine woods at the corner of Pomona Road and Firemen's Memorial Drive has accelerated as the politician who has proved himself to be the greatest threat to Ramapo's environment blunders ahead without the funding or support for a project that he has repeatedly said in public is going to be built whether the taxpayers want it or not.

Over the years, we have documented St. Lawrence's devastating record on the environment beginning with the millions of gallons of raw sewage spilled into streets and waterways under his influence as second chair at the Rockland County Sewer District #1; his disregard for environmental law with illegal clear-cuts at this site and on Elm Street in Spring Valley (both personal projects of his under the Ramapo Local Development Corporation of which he is President and Chairman of the Board); and his abandonment of rational zoning with the rush to urbanize Monsey and areas contingent to that village without any serious consideration of environmental reviews.

These photos were taken yesterday, and there is a complete set of 25 images at Preserve Ramapo on Flickr along with 44 images of what the woods were like before the destruction. The historic site is being carved up for parking lots. The two sets of photos are in folders on the right side of the Flickr page, and there's a convenient slideshow button at the top (looks like a small screen).
